Here is a good example of how little depth of field you can have when doing close-up work. I managed to just get the head of the worm in focus which has to be a mm or 2.

Here is a sample video I recorded with my Canon 7D and 400mm lens. DSLR video has many limitations like being manual focus but I think it will be much better in future generations of these cameras.

Practice, Practice, Practice

You can’t get better if you don’t practice. This is true of most things in life and its also true for photography. I recently watched a video by Moose Peterson on how to photograph shore birds. He had some great ideas and plenty of subjects because he was in a great birding location in Florida. Even though I didn’t have the time to go down to Charlestown or Newport some other good birding location, I decided it didn’t matter. What I really wanted to do was practice the tips I learned in the video, so I went down to Oakland beach an shot some sea gulls and I was able to practice everything I had learned.

It may not be the best location or the most interesting of species but I still some good shots and it was fun.

I know I’m supposed to post all of the names of these birds but I haven’t looked them up yet. Maybe some birders out there can clue me in.

I don’t know why but I just like this shot. When you begin photography you may become sensitive about what others think of your photos. Just remember the only opinion that matters is your own. With any given photo, some people will love it and others will hate it, so just create art that you enjoy and others will too.
